Quentin Beck was a special effects man who worked in several Hollywood studios. He dreamed to become famous, but failed. A friend joked that to become famous, he would have to rival a superhero while Beck took him seriously. Due to having an expansive knowledge of illusions, he became the supervillain of Spider-Man called Mysterio. He has attempted to kill Spider-Man several times, but failed.
After Quentin Beck was diagnosed with cancer, Daniel Berkhart took up the mantle, followed by Francis Klum, who had real superpowers instead of fake. Klum was foiled by Berkhart and Spider-Man inside Peter's school. Mysterio is seen as a villain in a fictional version of Spider-Man 2 in the Ultimate Spider-Man series.

Mysterio is a villain in the Spider-Man 2 video game. He takes control of The Statue of Liberty, only to be foiled by Spider-Man.
Mysterio is the main villain of the video game Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, trying to take over the world but is again foiled by Spider-Man.
