S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate and also for Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division. During the two 208 movies basedon Iron Man and Hulk, it stood for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division. It is run by Nick Fury. S.H.I.E.L.D. is an organisation based on superhumans. S.H.I.E.L.D. frequently enlists the help of the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man when a large superhuman crisis is occurring, such as when Venom takes over New York with his Symbiotes (Spider-Man: Web of Shadows), and to defeat Mysterio (Spider-Man: Friend or Foe). S.H.I.E.L.D. was used to register superheroes during the Superheroes registration act, which Spider-Man was against. During the Civil War, Tony Stark was made the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.
S.H.I.E.L.D. is well known in the Marvel Universe as having superior technology, far ahead of its time. It invented the Life Model Decoys, used to replace a person in danger with a robot. The technology was stolen by a supervillain, but was defeated by Fury. S.H.I.E.L.D is usually based on a helicarrier floating around New York without civillians somehow noticing it. So S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicles are not noticed, a machine from S.H.I.E.L.D. can change the appearance of a vehicle using a hologram, meaning the vehicle will still respond like the original vehicle.
